Maui is an island shaped by the ocean. Its beaches are where families gather, couples fall in love all over again and friends make memories that last a lifetime. So it makes perfect sense that a Maui beach photoshoot is one of the most popular ways for visitors and locals alike to capture their time on the island.
As Maui beach photographers, we spend our days with sand between our toes, watching the light dance across the water and helping people feel relaxed and confident in front of the camera. Whether you are planning a family session, a romantic couples shoot, a proposal, a maternity session or a portrait just for you, the beach offers a natural studio unlike anywhere else.
The warm glow of golden hour, the gentle sound of waves rolling in, palm trees swaying in the trade winds and an endless blue horizon – these are the ingredients of truly beautiful photographs.
There are beaches all over the world, but Maui’s beaches are something else. The island has more than 30 miles of beaches, and each one has its own character. Some are long, wide and golden. Others are small sheltered coves framed by black lava rock. A few even have dark volcanic sand.
The colors are what make Maui beach photography so magical. The water ranges from pale turquoise in the shallows to deep sapphire further out. At sunset the sky can burn orange, pink and violet, and those colors reflect off the wet sand like a mirror.
Maui’s beaches also come with stunning backdrops. On the south shore you can see the islands of Kaho‘olawe and Lāna‘i and the tiny crescent of Molokini. From the west side, Lāna‘i and Moloka‘i sit on the horizon. And from almost everywhere you can see the green slopes of the West Maui Mountains or the massive shoulder of Haleakalā.
We photograph all around the island, and we will always help you choose a beach based on where you are staying, the look you love and the time of year. Here are some of the areas we love most.
Wailea’s crescent beaches are framed by lava rock points and lined with resort gardens. The water is usually calm and clear, and the sunsets are some of the best on the island. A paved coastal walkway connects several beaches, giving us lots of variety in one session.
Further south, Mākena feels wilder and more natural. Big Beach (Oneloa) is one of the largest beaches on Maui, with wide golden sand and dramatic views. The shore break here can be powerful, so we always keep a respectful distance from the water and choose our spots carefully. Nearby coves and lava rock areas are wonderful for intimate portraits.
Kihei has a string of friendly neighborhood beaches and parks with soft sand, palm trees and grassy areas. It is convenient, relaxed and perfect for families with young children who want an easy, low-stress session.
The long stretch of Kā‘anapali Beach is famous for its resort atmosphere and the striking lava headland of Pu‘u Keka‘a, also known as Black Rock. Sunset here is beautiful, with Lāna‘i silhouetted on the horizon.
These sheltered crescent bays on the northwest coast are among the prettiest on the island. Leaning palms, soft sand and calm water in the summer months make them ideal for romantic couples sessions and family portraits.
For something different, the north shore near Pā‘ia has windswept beaches, sand dunes and big skies, while the Hāna coast offers black sand, lush greenery and rugged cliffs. These areas take more planning, but the results can be unforgettable.
The time of day you choose makes a huge difference to the look of your photographs.
The most popular choice by far. In the hour or so before sunset, the light becomes soft, warm and flattering. Skin glows, squinting disappears and the sky slowly fills with color. As the sun dips below the horizon, there is often a second burst of pink and purple light that makes for magical images.
Sunrise sessions are calm and peaceful. The beaches are almost empty, the water is often glassy and the light is soft and pastel. Families with little ones who wake up early love sunrise sessions, and visitors who are still on mainland time often find it surprisingly easy to be up and ready.
The Hawaiian sun is very strong in the middle of the day, which can create harsh shadows and squinting. We generally avoid midday for open-beach portraits, but shaded spots under trees can work if your schedule demands it.
Maui is warm and sunny all year round, but the ocean changes with the seasons.
In winter, large swells usually arrive on north- and west-facing shores, and some beaches can have big surf and strong currents. South-facing beaches are often calmer at this time of year. Winter is also humpback whale season, roughly from November to May, and it is not unusual to see whales spouting or breaching in the distance during a session.
In summer, the pattern often flips. South shores can get swell while many north and west beaches become calm and clear. Sunset times are later in summer and earlier in winter, and we always schedule your session around the exact sunset time on your date.
Because conditions vary, we keep an eye on the forecast and will suggest the best beach for your session a day or two before.
Maui’s ocean is beautiful but powerful. We put your safety first in every session.
We never ask anyone to stand in dangerous surf or on slippery lava rock.
We watch the waves at all times, especially when photographing children.
We choose locations with safe access and stable footing.
We respect posted warnings and closures.
We never approach or disturb wildlife such as sea turtles or monk seals.
Hawaiian green sea turtles (honu) and Hawaiian monk seals sometimes rest on Maui beaches. They are protected, so we always keep a respectful distance and enjoy them from afar. If one shows up during your session, it is a lovely moment to remember – just never touch or chase them.
Simple, soft clothing always looks best against sand and sea.
Choose two or three coordinating colors rather than matching outfits.
White, cream, sand, light blue, sage and blush all look wonderful at golden hour.
Flowing dresses and linen shirts move beautifully in the breeze.
Avoid busy patterns, neon colors and large logos.
Go barefoot – it looks natural and makes walking in the sand easy.
Add a touch of Hawai‘i with a fresh flower lei or a flower in your hair.
If you are not sure, send us photos of your outfit ideas before the session and we will happily help you choose.
Every session is unique, but here are some favorite ideas our clients love.
A simple walk hand in hand along the edge of the water creates natural movement and genuine smiles. As the waves wash over your feet, the reflections in the wet sand look stunning.
Kids running from the waves, couples splashing each other, a dad tossing his toddler in the air – these joyful moments often become the favorite photos from a session.
As the sun touches the horizon, we can create striking silhouettes against the colorful sky. They make beautiful wall art.
Maui’s dark volcanic rock makes a dramatic contrast with the bright ocean. With safe footing, we can create beautiful portraits sitting or standing on the rocks.
When the sun is still a little high, the shade of palm trees gives soft, even light and a classic tropical feel.
We photograph all kinds of beach sessions on Maui, including family vacations, extended family reunions, couples and honeymoons, surprise proposals, engagement sessions, elopements, vow renewals, maternity sessions, high school senior portraits, birthdays and personal branding shoots.
Each type of session has its own rhythm. A proposal requires quiet planning and perfect timing. A family session with toddlers needs patience and playful energy. A branding shoot needs variety and direction. Whatever you are celebrating, we tailor the session to you.
Once you book, we will chat about your plans, your group size and the kind of photos you love. We recommend a beach and time, and share tips on outfits and what to bring.
We meet you at the beach a little before the session begins. We start with a few relaxed group shots, then move into more playful and candid moments, followed by smaller groupings and individual portraits. Throughout the session we guide you with simple prompts so you never have to worry about how to pose.
Your images are carefully edited and delivered in a private online gallery where you can download, share and order prints.
Arrive a few minutes early so nobody feels rushed.
Bring water and a small towel, especially with kids.
Fix hair with a light product to help with the ocean breeze.
Leave sunglasses in the car to avoid tan lines on the nose and eyes.
Most of all, relax and have fun. The more you enjoy yourselves, the better your photos will be.
Many of our clients turn their photoshoot into a full beach day. Snorkel the reefs at Kapalua or near Mākena, watch surfers at Ho‘okipa near Pā‘ia, take a stand-up paddle lesson in Kihei or simply grab a shave ice and watch the sun go down. There is no better way to finish a session than with your toes in the sand and a beautiful Maui sunset in front of you.
Whether it is your first trip to Maui or your twentieth, a professional beach photoshoot is a wonderful way to remember it. We would love to help you capture the beauty of the island and the people you love.
