Maui is often called the Valley Isle, and its landscapes are astonishingly varied for an island you can drive across in under an hour. Within a single day you can travel from sunny golden beaches to misty rainforest valleys, from lava-rock coastlines to cool upcountry pastures, and from charming surf towns to the summit of a 10,000-foot volcano. For photographers, this variety is a dream. For you, it means your Maui photos can look exactly the way you imagine them.
At Maui Photoshoot, we photograph families, couples, proposals, weddings, seniors and portraits all over the island. This page is your introduction to Maui’s main photo regions, what makes each one special and how to choose the best location for your session. You will find detailed pages for each area throughout our site.
Before diving into specific areas, consider these questions:
Choosing a location near your accommodation saves driving time and stress, especially with young children. Maui’s main visitor areas are South Maui and West Maui, and each has wonderful options nearby.
Do you picture golden sand and turquoise water? Dramatic black lava? Lush jungle greenery? Rolling green hills? Your preferred aesthetic will narrow down the options.
Families with toddlers or elderly relatives need easy access, flat ground and nearby parking. Adventurous couples may be happy to walk farther for a more secluded spot.
West- and south-facing beaches are ideal for sunset over the ocean. Some locations are better in the morning, such as shaded valleys or quieter beaches.
Winter brings bigger surf on north- and west-facing shores and more showers in some areas, while summer is often calmer and drier. We will help match your location to the season.
South Maui is the sunniest, driest region of the island, making it a reliable choice for photoshoots year-round.
Elegant resorts, crescent beaches, lava rock points and a scenic coastal path. Wailea is perfect for families, couples and weddings who want a polished, luxurious feel.
Wilder and less developed, with the expansive Big Beach, a striking cinder cone and lava fields. Ideal for adventurous couples and families who want open space.
A relaxed beach town with easy-access beach parks, lawns and sunsets. Excellent for families and larger groups.
West Maui pairs beautiful beaches with the green West Maui Mountains and views of neighboring islands.
A world-famous resort beach with golden sand, a landmark lava formation and spectacular sunsets between the islands.
An intimate crescent bay with leaning palms and an old-Hawaiʻi charm, perfect for couples and small families.
Calm bays, rugged lava headlands and coastal trails at Maui’s northwestern tip, blending luxury and natural beauty.
From Olowalu to the north coast, West Maui offers quiet beaches, mountain backdrops and dramatic scenery. The region, including Lahaina, continues to recover from the 2023 wildfires, and we encourage visitors to travel respectfully.
A colorful surf town with long natural beaches, ironwood groves, windsurfers and a relaxed boho atmosphere. Ideal for couples and portraits with an artistic, free-spirited style.
On the slopes of Haleakalā, Upcountry offers pastures, eucalyptus forests, flower farms, jacaranda trees and cooler air. It is a unique alternative to the beach and perfect for engagements, families and portraits.
A lush, sacred valley with emerald cliffs, mist and the iconic ʻĪao Needle. Beautiful for rainforest-style portraits, with state park rules and reservations to consider.
Waterfalls, rainforest, black sand beaches and dramatic coastline along the famous Road to Hāna. Ideal for adventure sessions and elopements, with careful planning required.
The summit of Maui’s great volcano offers otherworldly landscapes and sunrises above the clouds. National Park rules, reservations and permits apply, and we help clients plan realistic, respectful options.
Popular beaches can have limited parking, especially near sunset. We provide clear meeting instructions and recommend arriving early.
Some state, county and national park locations require permits for commercial photography or events. Resorts have their own policies. We stay current with requirements.
We can recommend locations with easy access, short walks and flat ground for clients with mobility needs.
If the weather looks poor in one area, another part of the island may be sunny. We monitor forecasts and suggest alternatives when needed.
Many of Maui’s most beautiful locations are also culturally significant or environmentally fragile. We stay on paths, avoid sacred sites, keep our distance from wildlife and follow Leave No Trace principles. We ask our clients to join us in caring for the island.
Not sure where to have your session? Tell us where you are staying, who is in your group, the look you love and your preferred time of day. We will recommend the perfect Maui location for your photos.
