Planning a photoshoot on Maui should be exciting, not stressful. Yet many families and couples tell us they feel overwhelmed by the decisions: Which beach? What time? What should everyone wear? How do we keep the kids happy? How do we pull off a surprise proposal? These are exactly the questions our guides are designed to answer.
On this page you will find an overview of our in-depth Maui photography guides, along with our most important planning advice in one place. Whether you are just beginning to dream about your session or finalizing the last details, these resources will help you feel confident and prepared.
Outfits can make or break your photos. Our complete outfit guide covers color palettes that suit Maui’s beaches, lava rock and greenery, how to coordinate a family without matching, fabrics that flow in the trade winds, Hawaiian touches like lei and haku, and specific ideas for families, couples, maternity, seniors and headshots.
Light is everything in photography. This guide explains golden hour, sunrise versus midday light, how sunrise and sunset times change throughout the year, Maui’s seasons, weather differences across the island, whale season and how to choose the best day of your trip for photos.
Should you wake up early or wait for evening? We compare the light, crowds, wind, weather and kid-friendliness of each option and explain where the sun rises and sets on different parts of the island.
Our step-by-step proposal guide covers choosing a location, picking the time, creating a cover story, working with a photographer, protecting the ring, planning for weather and celebrating afterward.
This guide shares our best advice for babies, toddlers, young kids and teens: timing around naps, what to bring, how to keep things playful and how to handle meltdowns calmly.
If you only remember a few things from our guides, make it these:
Popular dates, especially around holidays, spring break, summer and whale season, can fill up months in advance. Booking early gives you the best choice of dates and times.
Plan your session near the start of your vacation so you have backup days for weather and can enjoy your photos for the rest of the trip.
The hour after sunrise or before sunset offers the most flattering light. Avoid midday sun unless shade or clouds are available.
Choose a cohesive color palette with complementary tones and textures instead of identical outfits.
The best photos come from genuine connection. Trust your photographer, interact with your loved ones and enjoy the moment.
Maui offers incredible variety. Our location pages describe each area in detail, but here is a quick overview:
South Maui (Wailea, Mākena, Kīhei): sunny, dry, golden beaches and ocean sunsets.
West Maui (Kāʻanapali, Nāpili, Kapalua): palm-lined beaches, island views and mountain backdrops.
North Shore (Pāʻia): boho, surf-town vibe with wide natural beaches.
Upcountry: rolling green pastures, flowers and cooler air.
Central and East Maui (ʻĪao, Hāna): rainforest, waterfalls and dramatic landscapes.
Haleakalā: epic summit scenery, with special access rules.
Maui is not only a beautiful destination but also a home and a place of deep cultural significance. As photographers and visitors, we share a responsibility to treat it with respect:
Follow park rules, closures and reservation requirements.
Stay on trails and avoid fragile vegetation.
Keep a respectful distance from sea turtles, monk seals and other wildlife.
Avoid culturally sensitive and sacred sites.
Leave no trace, and take all trash with you.
Support local businesses and communities, especially those still recovering in West Maui.
Beaches in Hawaiʻi are public, but commercial photography, weddings and events at some state, county and national park locations may require permits. Resort properties have their own policies. We stay up to date with current requirements and help guide you to appropriate locations.
Maui’s ocean, streams and cliffs can be dangerous. We never ask clients to stand in heavy surf, on wet lava rock near waves, in flooding streams or near cliff edges. Your safety always comes before any photo.
Session length depends on the type of shoot and the size of your group. Mini sessions are short and focused, while full sessions allow for more variety, locations and outfits.
Maui showers are often brief. If the forecast looks poor, we can adjust the location or reschedule when possible.
Your edited images are delivered through a private online gallery where you can download, share and order prints.
Absolutely. We recommend locations based on your style, group, accommodations and the season.
We are always happy to help. Reach out with your questions, ideas and travel dates, and we will help you plan a Maui photoshoot that is relaxed, fun and beautiful.
