Just south of Wailea, the road narrows, the resorts thin out and the landscape becomes wilder. Welcome to Mākena. Here, long stretches of golden sand meet rugged lava fields, a red-brown cinder cone rises from the shoreline and the ocean glows in shades of turquoise and deep blue. Mākena feels more natural and less developed than its neighbors, which makes it a favorite for photographers and visitors seeking an authentic Maui experience.
At Maui Photoshoot, we love creating images in Mākena. The combination of wide beaches, dramatic volcanic textures and expansive sunset views gives every session a sense of adventure and natural beauty. Whether you are planning family portraits, a romantic couples session, a proposal or an elopement, Mākena offers backdrops that feel unmistakably Hawaiian.
Mākena is home to one of Maui’s most famous beaches, Oneloa – better known as Big Beach. Its long, wide expanse of golden sand gives us room to create sweeping, uncrowded images, even when the beach is busy.
Puʻu Ŋlaʻi, a cinder cone at the north end of Big Beach, adds striking color and texture to photos. Further south, lava fields stretch toward the ocean, creating a raw, dramatic environment unlike anywhere else on the island.
Like much of south Maui, Mākena faces west. On clear evenings the sun sets over the ocean, often framed by the islands of Kahoʻolawe and Lānaʻi and the crescent-shaped Molokini.
With fewer buildings and more open space, Mākena feels like a hidden corner of the island. Your photos will have a natural, untouched quality that many couples and families love.
Part of Mākena State Park, Big Beach offers wide golden sand, powerful blue water and big skies. It is perfect for walking shots, sunset portraits and family images with plenty of space. The shorebreak here can be strong, so we keep children and anyone in formal attire at a safe distance from the waves.
A softer, calmer beach with lawns, palms and lava rock points. Maluaka is known for sea turtles in the nearby waters and is a lovely, gentle setting for families and couples.
Lava rock outcroppings around Mākena offer dramatic textures and ocean views. They are wonderful for editorial-style couples portraits and adventurous sessions. We only use safe, stable areas and avoid wet rock and surf zones.
The area’s twisting kiawe trees and coastal vegetation add character and shade, especially for portraits in the afternoon.
The space and natural beauty of Mākena make it ideal for family photos. Children can run, explore and play while we capture genuine moments. For families with toddlers, we choose calmer spots like Maluaka.
Mākena’s dramatic scenery creates romantic, adventurous images. Golden-hour walks along Big Beach and quiet moments on lava rock are among our favorites.
Mākena’s wide beaches and quiet corners offer great proposal spots. We help plan the perfect timing and location and stay discreet until the big moment.
For couples who want a natural, less resort-focused setting, Mākena is ideal. Its beaches and lava landscapes provide a beautiful, wild backdrop for exchanging vows. Ceremonies in state parks or on public beaches may require permits, so we help couples understand what is needed.
Golden sand, soft light and flowing fabric make Mākena a dreamy setting for maternity and individual portraits.
The hour before sunset is the most popular time for sessions in Mākena. The low sun lights up the sand and lava rock in warm tones, and the sky often glows with color as the sun dips toward the horizon.
Mākena State Park has posted opening hours, and parking areas may close in the evening, so we plan sunset sessions with these times in mind. We will confirm the timing for your date.
Morning sessions are also beautiful, with soft light, calmer winds and fewer people on the beach. If you plan to snorkel or explore afterward, a morning session makes for an easy, relaxed day.
Mākena State Park has parking lots for Big Beach, and non-resident visitors may need to pay a parking fee. Other beaches have limited roadside or lot parking. Arrive early, especially near sunset.
Big Beach is known for strong shorebreak and currents. We keep safety a priority and never ask clients to stand in dangerous surf. Children should always be supervised near the water.
Mākena is sunny and dry, with little natural shade on some beaches. Bring water, apply reef-safe sunscreen and consider a hat until the session begins.
Sea turtles often rest on Mākena’s beaches and in its waters. They are protected, so we keep a respectful distance. Some areas in and around Mākena are culturally and ecologically sensitive, including the ʻĀhihi-Kīnaʻu Natural Area Reserve to the south, where specific rules apply. We always follow posted guidance.
Puʻu Ŋlaʻi separates Big Beach from Little Beach. We do not use Little Beach for family sessions, but we can recommend many beautiful spots nearby.
Mākena’s natural palette of golden sand, red cinder, dark lava and deep blue ocean pairs beautifully with:
Whites, creams and sand tones for a soft, timeless look.
Rust, terracotta and mustard tones that echo the cinder cone.
Ocean blues and teals for a fresh, coastal feel.
Flowing fabrics that catch the breeze.
Bare feet on the sand, and sandals for walking on rocky areas.
Mākena is perfect for a day of exploring. Snorkel at Maluaka or nearby coves, look for turtles, hike part of the coastline near La Perouse Bay or simply relax on Big Beach. Many clients enjoy a beach day and finish with a sunset photoshoot.
We know Mākena’s beaches, parking, light and safety considerations. We plan your session around tides, weather and park hours, and we guide you through relaxed poses that let the stunning scenery shine. You receive beautifully edited images that capture the wild, natural spirit of south Maui.
If you are drawn to wide beaches, volcanic landscapes and golden sunsets, Mākena is the perfect place for your Maui photos. Contact us to check availability and start planning your session.
