Wailea is one of Maui’s most beautiful and polished destinations. Stretching along the island’s sunny south shore, it is known for crescent-shaped golden beaches, calm turquoise water, manicured resort grounds and some of the most reliable sunsets in Hawaiʻi. For photographers, Wailea is a dream: varied scenery within walking distance, soft evening light and an elegant atmosphere that suits everything from family portraits to weddings.
At Maui Photoshoot, Wailea is one of our favorite places to work. We photograph families on vacation, couples celebrating honeymoons and anniversaries, surprise proposals, intimate weddings and vow renewals along this stunning coastline. We know the beaches, the light and the timing, and we use that local knowledge to create images that feel effortless and natural.
Wailea sits in the rain shadow of Haleakalā, so it tends to be sunnier and drier than many other parts of the island. While no forecast is guaranteed, this makes Wailea a dependable choice for photoshoots, especially for visitors with limited time.
Wailea faces west across the ʻAlalakeiki Channel. On clear evenings the sun sets over the ocean, often with the islands of Kahoʻolawe and Lānaʻi on the horizon and the small crescent of Molokini offshore. These layered views add depth and a sense of place to your images.
Within a short walk you can find golden sand, black lava rock, tide pools, palm trees, flowering plants and grassy lawns. This variety allows us to create a diverse gallery without long drives between locations.
Wailea’s beaches are often calm, especially in the mornings. Gentle waves make it easier and safer to include the water in your photos, which is wonderful for families with young children.
A wide crescent of golden sand with gentle waves, palms and lava rock points on either side. It is a classic choice for family portraits and sunset sessions.
South of Wailea Beach, these quieter beaches offer lava rock formations, sandy stretches and a slightly more secluded feel.
On the border of Wailea and Kīhei, Keawakapu offers a long sandy shoreline and wide-open sunset views. It can be less crowded than some resort beaches.
These neighboring beaches are known for calm water and snorkeling. Lava rock and palms create beautiful frames for portraits.
This paved coastal walkway connects several beaches and resorts. It passes lava rock, native plants, lawns and ocean views, offering many beautiful spots for photos along the way.
Wailea is a favorite for families. Calm water, soft sand and easy access make sessions comfortable for children and grandparents alike. Many families staying at nearby resorts can walk to their session.
With its romantic sunsets and elegant atmosphere, Wailea is ideal for couples. Strolls along the shoreline, close embraces on lava rock and silhouettes against the sunset sky create timeless images.
Wailea is one of Maui’s most popular proposal destinations. We help plan the perfect spot and timing, then capture the moment discreetly so it stays a surprise.
Wailea’s resorts and beaches host many intimate weddings and elopements. The setting feels luxurious yet relaxed, and the sunset provides a stunning backdrop for portraits.
Wailea’s greenery, lava rock and ocean views create flattering backdrops for individual portraits, maternity sessions and personal branding images.
The hour before sunset is the most popular time for photos in Wailea. The light is warm and soft, and the sunset often paints the sky in shades of gold, pink and orange. Because Wailea faces west, sunset sessions are especially beautiful here.
Sunrise sessions are another lovely option. Beaches are quieter, the water is often calm, and soft light rises over Haleakalā behind you. Morning sessions work well for families with young children who wake early and are happiest before nap time.
Wailea is warm year-round. Winter can bring occasional rain and cooler evenings, while summer tends to be drier. Humpback whales typically visit Maui’s waters from about November to May, and on a lucky day you may spot them breaching offshore during your session.
Sunset times shift during the year, so we will confirm your session start time based on the date of your shoot.
Wailea’s public beaches have public access points and parking areas, but these can fill up quickly, especially near sunset. Plan to arrive early. If you are staying at a resort, walking to your session along the beach path is often easiest.
Some resorts have their own policies about professional photography on their grounds. Beaches in Hawaiʻi are public, but resort lawns and private areas may not be. We know which areas work and will guide you to appropriate locations.
Certain beaches and parks may require permits for commercial photography or events such as weddings. We stay informed about current requirements and help you plan accordingly.
We follow Leave No Trace principles, stay off fragile vegetation and keep a respectful distance from wildlife, including sea turtles and monk seals, which are protected by law.
Wailea’s refined setting suits elegant, coordinated outfits. A few tips:
Soft whites, creams, blush, sand and light blues blend beautifully with the beach and sky.
Deeper jewel tones such as navy, emerald or burgundy look striking against lava rock at sunset.
Flowing dresses and linen shirts move well in the breeze and look timeless.
Avoid large logos and busy prints.
Coordinate colors as a group rather than matching exactly.
Bare feet look natural on the beach.
Wailea offers plenty to enjoy before or after your session. Snorkel at Ulua or Mokapū Beach, walk the beach path, enjoy a sunset dinner, browse the shops and restaurants at local centers, or book a snorkel trip to Molokini Crater. Scheduling your photos early in your trip also gives you a chance to share images with family and friends while you are still on the island.
We know Wailea’s beaches, light patterns, parking challenges and best angles. We guide you through relaxed poses, keep sessions fun for kids and adults, and deliver beautifully edited images that capture the warmth and beauty of Maui’s south shore.
Whether you are planning family portraits, a romantic couples session, a surprise proposal or an intimate wedding, Wailea offers a stunning setting for your story. Contact us to check availability and start planning your Wailea photoshoot.
