Kīhei is the laid-back heart of south Maui. Stretching for miles along the coast, this friendly beach town is known for sunshine, sandy beach parks, colorful sunsets and a relaxed, local atmosphere. Many visitors stay in Kīhei’s condos and vacation rentals, and many Maui families call it home. With so many beaches within a short drive, Kīhei is one of the most convenient and versatile places on the island for a photoshoot.
At Maui Photoshoot, we photograph families, couples, proposals, seniors and small celebrations throughout Kīhei. We love the town’s easygoing vibe and the way its beaches glow in the late afternoon light. Our goal is to create relaxed, natural images that capture the fun and warmth of your time on Maui.
Kīhei sits on the leeward side of Haleakalā and is one of the sunniest, driest parts of Maui. While weather can never be guaranteed, Kīhei’s climate makes it a reliable choice for outdoor sessions throughout the year.
Kīhei’s beach parks have convenient parking, restrooms and short walks to the sand. This makes sessions easy for families with young children, grandparents and anyone who prefers minimal walking.
Kīhei faces west across the bay. On clear evenings the sun drops toward the ocean with the West Maui Mountains, Kahoʻolawe and Lānaʻi on the horizon – a beautiful backdrop for golden-hour portraits.
Sandy beaches, lava rock points, grassy lawns, palm trees and wide ocean views are all found within a few minutes of each other.
These three beach parks are among the most popular in south Maui. Golden sand, rocky points and grassy areas make them versatile and family-friendly. Kamaʻole III has a large lawn that is great for kids and groups.
At the southern end of Kīhei, Keawakapu offers a long, beautiful stretch of sand and stunning sunset views. It often feels quieter than the beach parks.
Kalama Park has open lawns, palms and ocean views, and the rocky shoreline nearby adds texture to photos.
In north Kīhei, long sandy beaches stretch toward Māʻlaea Bay with views of the West Maui Mountains. These wide-open beaches are perfect for walking shots and big-sky sunset images.
Kīhei is one of our top locations for family sessions. Gentle waves, soft sand and easy parking make it ideal for families with young kids. Lawns at some beach parks are perfect for toddlers and grandparents.
Large groups appreciate Kīhei’s spacious beach parks. There is plenty of room for big group portraits, smaller family groupings and candid moments.
Kīhei’s sunsets create a romantic setting for couples. Barefoot walks along Keawakapu and embraces on lava rock make beautiful images.
Kīhei offers many lovely proposal spots, especially quieter stretches of beach at sunset. We help plan the timing and location so the moment feels private and special.
Kīhei’s variety of settings makes it a great choice for senior portraits, maternity sessions and personal branding photos.
The hour before sunset is the most popular time for sessions in Kīhei. The warm, golden light is flattering for everyone, and the sky often fills with color as the sun sets.
Morning sessions are also lovely, with soft light, calm water and quieter beaches. Morning trade winds are often lighter, which helps keep hair and clothing under control.
Afternoon winds can be strong in south Maui at certain times of year. We plan around conditions and choose sheltered spots when needed.
From about November through May, humpback whales visit Maui’s waters, and the shallow channel off south Maui is one of the best places to spot them. During your session you may see spouts or breaches offshore. The Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary has a visitor center in Kīhei that is worth a visit if you love whales.
Kīhei’s beach parks have parking lots, but they can fill up around sunset. Arrive a little early to find a space.
Popular beach parks can be busy, especially on weekends and holidays. We know the quieter corners and angles that keep your images clean and uncluttered.
Beaches in Hawaiʻi are public, but county beach parks have rules about commercial activities, and some events or setups may require permits. We stay up to date with current requirements.
Green sea turtles are often seen along Kīhei’s shoreline. They are protected, so we keep a respectful distance. Kīhei is also home to Koʻieʻie Fishpond, an ancient Hawaiian fishpond that reminds us of the area’s rich history. We always treat cultural sites with respect.
Kīhei’s casual atmosphere suits relaxed, coordinated outfits:
Light neutrals like white, cream, tan and soft gray look timeless.
Ocean blues and greens complement the water and sky.
Pastels and soft florals look fresh and summery.
Avoid large logos, neon colors and loud patterns.
Coordinate colors rather than matching exactly.
Linen and cotton fabrics are comfortable in the warm weather.
Kīhei offers plenty to do before or after your photos. Enjoy shave ice, browse local shops, snorkel at a nearby beach, paddleboard in the calm morning water or enjoy dinner at one of the town’s casual restaurants. Many families schedule their session early in the trip so they can relax and enjoy the rest of their vacation.
We know Kīhei’s beaches, light, wind patterns and parking, and we plan sessions to make the most of every location. We keep things relaxed and fun, especially for kids, and deliver beautifully edited images that capture the sunny, carefree spirit of south Maui.
Whether you are planning a family session, a romantic couples shoot or a surprise proposal, Kīhei is a wonderful place for your Maui photos. Contact us to check availability and plan your session.
